What you should be doing is running multiple speedtests to different servers all at the same time. Your ISP needs to inform you about those pipes that are outside of their control and therefore you cannot blame them for the speed if it is suboptimal. So a test is only between your computer, and the various pipes owned by different internet service providers, to the server computer. The internet is a maze of different size pipes and each one can be congested to different degrees than others. This is where you usually see the meter jump in speed a second after the test starts. If the file comes in really fast, it will continue to test by downloading some larger files in parallel. Which means the http server software on the remote computer needs to collect the file and send it to you - much longer than an actual ping. ![]() These are not really pings, but are just http get commands - the time it takes to download a file.
